White Throated Magpie Jays (Calocitta formosa)

Description: White throated magpie jays are beautiful, large, and noisy species of jays. They have very long tails, equaling the length of their body. They
are a blueish grey on the upper parts of the body and wings with a white underside. The crest is long, white with black tips .They have black outline
around the face tracing down around the throat area.
White throated magpie jays are about 20 inches in total length and weigh about 200 to 227 grams.
General Information: White throated magpie jays are very nosie birds with harsh calls. They are gregarious(very social)and travel in flocks of 6 to 10
individuals, mobbing spectators.. They have been observed to have helper in the flock, aiding in the feeding of the females and chicks. In Jaliscco, Mexico
white Throated and black throated magpie jays naturally hybridizes and forms a super species.
Range: Central America on the Pacific-slope thorn forest. Jalisco, Mexico to Guanacaste, Costa Rica.
Life Span: Unknown average life span, but I am researching.
Diet: In the wild- Jays are omnivorous birds. They eat Small lizards, caterpillars, beetles, grass hoppers, cockroaches, frogs, eggs, and young birds. They are
also observed eating Fruit, Vegetables, and the nectar of the balsa tree(Ochroma pyramidale).
We feed- Fresh chopped fruits, veggies, mice, cooked mix(brown rice, beans, lentils, carrots, and flax seed), some parrot seed for enrichment, science diet
senior small kibble dog food and Zupreem Low Iron soft-bill pellets.
Breeding: They nest from February to July. They build a nest in the upper forks of trees. The nest is built out of sticks, roots and fibers. 3 to 4 eggs grey
eggs with brown spots are laid. Once the eggs are laid, the female incubates for 16 to 21 days. The males will feed the female while she incubates and the
chicks once they hatch.
